BOW's 2012 Season Wrap-up

When BOW was predicted to finish last in our division for 2012, I was a bit insulted and didn't see this team as being THAT bad.  After completing a block or two, I was thinking that the prognosticators might be correct!  (They were......)  This team really did stink (53 - 109).

"Leading" the offense was 9th round draft pick-up Cody Ross.  In 119 games, Cody tied for HRs with Salty (14) and drove-in a team-leading 52 RBIs, but his .214 AVG was nothing to write home about.  Jeter led with a .294 AVG, 161 hits, and 66 runs scored.  Speedster Jarrod Dyson broke the TBA stolen base record he set in 2011 with 80 swipes in 2012.  Big disappointments were seen in C. Maybin (.213 / 9 / 49 / 31 SB), J. Lowrie (.175 / 3 / 16), and K. Suzuki (.167 / 2 / 14).

Leading the team in victories was Sabathia with 9 wins.  During his first two seasons, CC had several opportunities to become a 20-game winner during the sixth block, but couldn't do it either time......but he managed to become a 20-game LOSER this season in his final start.  Tommy Hunter was the only starter with a winning record (7 - 6).  First-round pick B. Beachy collected some respectable numbers (158 Ks in 147 IP), but finished with a 4 - 11 record with a 4.46 ERA.

In the bullpen, closer N. Feliz was rather porous, picking-up 9 losses with a 3.92 ERA.  Bright spots were E. Frieri (2.25 ERA in 84 G) and rookie A. Chapman, who managed a team low 2.06 ERA.  He collected 54 BBs in 48 IP, but countered that with 58 Ks and only 25 hits allowed.

I believe that BOW might have set the TBA record for "Most Letters in the Names of a Pitching - Catching Battery" when Fautino De Los Santos took the mound with Jarrod Saltalamachia behind the dish.  Another TBA record might be what "Mr. Mop-up" Brian Duensing did out of BOW's bullpen:  He pitched 129.2 innings, ALL in relief, and did not have a decision in 58 appearances, finishing with a 0 - 0 record.  Derek Jeter's record of playing in every TBA game to-date was quickly shattered in Block 1.

I am issuing a challenge for anyone to prove that they have had worse "luck" with their draft picks.  Going back to the 2010 draft, I selected N. Feliz and K. Blanks in the first 2 rounds.  While Feliz had a great rookie year as a closer, I selected him in-hopes of seeing him in the rotation in a couple of years.  My wish came true in 2012, but hopes were dashed as a trip to the DL soon turned into TJ surgery.  Blanks was starting for SD in April of 2010, but he wasn't hitting.  Next thing I know, TJ surgery was being mentioned.....then it was a done deal!  After recovery from that, it appeared that Blanks might win the LF job in 2012, but then SD obtained C. Quentin.  Next thing I know, rotator cuff surgery is being mentioned for Blanks after slamming into a wall, so ANOTHER season was lost.

In 2011, a mid-round pick left me with few established rookies, so I went with the Phillies' highly-touted Domonic Brown.  J. Werth was gone and RF was aching for Brown to take-over.  He got hurt in Spring Training, tried to came-back too soon, never got his timing right, and was back in the minors in a few months.  With the trades of Victorino and Pence, Brown got some playing time late in 2012.  We'll see where that takes him in 2013.

In 2012, Braves' B. Beachy was worthy of a 1st round pick and looked to be a great catch.  It wasn't too long before he was leading the NL in ERA.  It wasn't long after that, he's on the DL and (you know what's coming!), Tommy John's name is being mentioned.  When 2nd round pick A. Chapman went down with "tired arm" late this season, I was wondering where that was going.  Luckily, it appeared to be just that.

With the 2nd overall pick in 2013, (after Bryce) the field is wide open on whose season that I will ruin!

Marines Season In Review

Though the sting has not quite lifted from being ousted by rival Vero Beach in the EMLCS, the Marines have a lot to be proud of for their 2012 season. For the first time in franchise history, the Marines reached 100 wins, handily took the division title and had the most regular season wins with 117. The Hello Kitty Trophy remains ever elusive to GM Eric Posch, but with a solid core set to return for 2013, the Marines remain optimistic of being right back in the hunt. Before completely looking forward, here's a look at back at what went right and what went wrong in the 2012 season.

Team MVP Matt Kemp's season will largely be remembered for his season ending flyout in Game 7

Pitching MVP/Team MVP: Matt Cain. The Marines had one target last offseason, and Matt Cain was their man. After long negotiations that reached impasse after impasse, Cain finally was brought to Colorado for a package consisting of Nick Markakis, Ivan Nova, Danny Espinosa and others. He proved to be worth the cost, dominating competitors to the tune of 18-7 and a 2.25 ERA. He will join Felix Hernandez in 2013 as the head of a strong rotation.

Offensive MVP: Matt Kemp. With 42 HRs, 111 RBIs and 30 steals to go with his Gold Glove, there were few players who had better seasons than Matt in the EML. Though his playoffs ended on a sour note, he will also be remembered for hitting 9th inning and 10th inning game tying HRs against San Antonio in a crucial game. Injuries will keep his play limited in 2013, but he will be elite when on the field.

Relief MVP: Daniel Bard. Daniel will have to savor his dominant 38 save season, as he will find himself without a home in the coming weeks. He often made things interesting in 2012 (and cost Manager Eric Posch an estimated 1.87 years off his life) but more often than not Daniel slammed the door, whether in save situations or as a fireman to come out and clean up the messes of others. He'll be missed, but newcomer Kenley Jansen is already eyeing this title for 2013.

Newcomer Award: Jake Peavy. Traded for the Ghost of Francisco Liriano, Peavy was acquired as a flyer for the future (which panned out!), but the Marines could not have expected the season they got from Peavy in 2012. Going 12-2 with a 2.82 ERA in his 20 starts, Peavy pitched like an ace out of the #5 spot, a spot that seemed to house magical components (Cobb's 2.30 ERA, Bass's 1.98 ERA, Bailey's 1.19 ERA also benefiting in limited innings). He'll be back in 2013 with a huge card.

And for the Marines' dunces…

Better Than Yuniesky Betancourt (I guess) Award: Jason Giambi. Acquired for a middle round pick and coming to a cozy ballpark, Giambi seemed like a perfect bench bat for the Marines. He completely failed to impress in his 100+ ABs, though, hitting just 6 HRs and posting an OBP under .300. His brief tenure with the Marines will not be remembered.

Starting Pitching LVP: Felix Hernandez. It hurts to give him this, but my rationale is it will serve as extra motivation to earn the Cy Young in 2013. That Felix's 16-7, 4.46 ERA season is as bad as it gets says a lot about the season the Marines had. Felix also earned some inflated stats from eating innings to save the bullpen, a value which cannot be forgotten. Overall, Felix had about as good a 'bad' season as a pitcher can have, and he'll be hungry atop the rotation next season.

I Asked for Relief, Not Grief! Award: Santiago Casilla. Last year's Relief MVP had a fall from grace in 2012. His 3.71 ERA wasn't awful, but his 1.64 WHIP was ugly. It seemed every game he came in he was walking someone, and making his manager turn to Bard to clean up his disaster. Casilla was given high expectations coming into the season and was a major letdown.

Wish I’d Let You Go to Napa Award: Alex Gonzalez. One of Colorado's seemingly annual draft headscratchers, GM Posch somehow thought he needed to trade up for this clown. He was brought on for one job and one job only: be solid offensively against lefties. He failed. His .238/.267/.349 line against southpaws was redeemed only by above average defense, but not enough to keep this from being another page in the book of regret for Eric. Perhaps this is the year he'll learn not to make ridiculous mid-draft trades out of paranoia of getting the guy he wants.

Reno Playoff Recap

The Aces won the 2012 TBA Championship with no overwhelmingly fantastic individual effort.  It was done as a team with a different contributor every night.

During the Division Series vs Oahu the hitters were on display led by Jay Bruce who hit .500 with 3 HR's during the 3 games.  Overall the team batted .314 during that series.

During the Championship Series vs Washington the hitters were non-existent racking up a .185 team batting average during the 6 games though Josh Hamilton came up with 3 key HR's while batting .190.

During the World Series vs Vero Beach the hitters came back to a more respectable .274 clip with the little guys doing the majority of the damage including Jesus Guzman and Cliff Pennington who both batted .455 and Kevin Youkilis did some damage with the long ball hitting 3 HR's including two in the deciding Game 6.

The pitching was consistent throughout as the Aces put up a 3.33, 3.46, and 3.40 ERA for each respective Series.

The biggest telltale stat of the Reno 2012 Post Season was the pitching breakdown:

Reno Starting Pitchers 5-4 with a 4.16 ERA
Reno Relief Pitchers 6-0 with a 1.87 ERA

The Starters just had to keep us in the game and the bullpen would lock it down.

Another telltale stat is the Home-Road Record Breakdown.  Reno was 7-1 at home during the playoffs and only 4-3 on the road.  This team was built for Camden Yards.

All in all a fun season and some interesting playoff statistics for this Billy Beane GM clone.

Here are the entire playoff statistics:

History was made in Washington as Tim Lincecum(1-0) tossed a no-hitter and the
Reno Aces defeated the Washington Booze Hounds by the score of 3 to
0.

Lincecum had overwhelming stuff tonight. He simply never gave the Washington
batters a decent pitch to drive. He walked 3 Washington batters. The
tension built to a fever pitch. After the 8th inning everybody in the
ballpark was anticipating what would happen in the 9th. Washington could do
no damage in the bottom of the 9th.

Tim Hudson(3-1) suffered the loss. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 7
hits and 3 walks. 'I gave it everything I had. It's probably the greatest day
of my life,' Lincecum said. 'I was out there focusing on my catcher's glove,
that's all. I just concentrated on pitching my game.'
