BOW Breaks Even in Block 4

Bowling Green finally posted it's first non-losing block, managing a 13 - 13 record. That keeps the team at 12 games under .500.

What seems to be the problem here? Well, when four of your regulars are hitting under .220 (Jeter = .218 / Ludwick = .206 / K. Suzuki = .203 and Maybin + Burrell = .176) and your two main starting rotation pieces sport ERA over 5 (Arroyo = 5.11 / Sabathia = 6+), it is going to be tough to win!

On the bight side, Thome is clubbing HRs like nobody's business (25 in 170 AB) in limited action, but he also gets a lot of IBBs with little line-up protction after him.....and a lot of his HRs are solo shots. K. Johnson (.305 / 18 / 66 / 11 SB) has done his best to rebound from his miserable 2010 campaign, but his "4" glove at 2B is very, very trying at times. Jeter is playing flawless SS (no errors!), but his "3" glove is putting a LOT of runners on base. J. Lowrie (.280 / 11 / 32 in 143 AB) has been a weclomed bat, but B. Inge had been playing well enough at 3B (.270 ./ 10 / 30) to push Lowrie to the DH role vs. Lefties. With Ka'Aihue contining to stumble, M. Moreland made his TBA debut this past block and managed a .22 / 3 / 11 in limited action. Bright spots for next year would be Moreland and rebounds from Maybin and McLouth. First & Second-round draft picks D. Brown and K. Blanks are playing at the MLB level, but not performing very well.

Hunter / Hughes / Floyd have combined for a 20 - 17 record...not bad for a team under .500. With the exception of Feliz (5 - 1 / 1.81 / 20 SV), the bullpen is not good. Wakefield has done his best in long relief / mop-up role (3.68 / 2 - 3) and will probably be rewarded with a few starts in September. Duensing's MLB sucess in 2010 did not translate well to his Strat card, as he is 2 - 6 with a 4.94 ERA. E. Frieri is a bright spot for next season, as is D. Gee. The J. Carroll-for-R. Perry trade didn't turn-out so well for us. Perry is 2 - 5 with a 4.33 ERA, but is useful, as he leads the team in apparances (51). Maybe P. Hughes & T. Hunter can both stay healthy and right their seasons?

Prognosis: More losing than winning in the next 2 blocks.

The hometown crowd was rewarded with a dramatic ending, as the Reno Aces
staged a comeback win over the Aberdeen Iron Birds by the count of 5 to
4.

Reno won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3 hits.
John Buck led off and got things going when he delivered a single. Nick
Swisher followed next and he lined a one-base hit. After another out, Josh
Hamilton was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. David Wright
stepped in and he belted a three-run homer resulting in an exciting win for
Reno and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Reno ended up
with 11 hits for the game while Aberdeen had 6.

The win went to Ramon Ramirez(3-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Ryan
Madson(7-3) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 2/3

'Now that is what I call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like
this, of course,' Rich Robertson offered. 'Everyone at the stadium had a
great time - did you see the fans go wild there at the end?!'

Magglio Ordonez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Ryan Dempster took a no-hitter
into the 8th inning as the Oregon Beavers beat the ice-cold Nassau ballclub
by a score of 8 to 0.

Dempster(9-4) was simply too much for the Nassau batters. He didn't allow
much, just 1 hit and no walks in 9 innings. Dempster struckout 15 Nassau
batters seeing his ERA drop from 3.30 to 3.09. The right-handed Dempster had
his no-hit bid broken up by Casey McGehee who singled with two outs in the
8th inning. Oregon finished with 13 hits in the victory.

Brian Moehler(2-3) was tagged with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 9 hits
and 5 walks in 6 innings. Dempster was pleased with his performance. He
noted, 'I had good command of all my pitches. Just as important, my location
was right on.'

Jake Peavy racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts as the Napa Winers
beat the Evanston Wildcats in 21 innings by a score of 1 to 0.

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Finally, Napa pulled the
game out in the 21st inning. Coco Crisp drew a walk. Crisp then stole
second base. Jeff Keppinger then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jason Heyward
came up and he was walked intentionally. Gaby Sanchez was next to bat, but
he was a strikeout victim. Jack Cust extended the rally and drew a walk to
load the bases. Peter Moylan then let one slip out of his hand for a wild
pitch. Randy Winn then drew a walk to load the bases. Evanston went down
without a fight in the bottom of the 21st.

The victory went to J.J. Putz(3-1) who went 5 innings, allowing no runs.
Moylan(2-2) was the loser in relief. He had trouble throwing strikes and
issued 5 walks in 2 innings.

'After the stretch we have been through lately, this victory is especially
sweet' offered Eamonn Dymer. Now, we just have to make this the norm - not
the exception!'

distance as the Kansas City Bashers topped the Vero Beach Bums by a score of
7 to 3 at Tropicana Field.

Kansas City came up with 6 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 4 base hits.
That scoring would be all that was needed. Both teams' bats went to sleep
after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point.

Shields(3-5) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Wade Davis(3-6)
was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings and saw

In a dramatic ending, the San Antonio Alamos staged a comeback win over the
Kansas City Bashers by the count of 3 to 2.

San Antonio erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Jason Bay led off and started the
attack as he doubled. Jon Rauch then let one slip out of his hand for a wild
pitch. Jose Guillen then drew a walk. Jason Varitek followed next and he
stroked a one-base hit. Jair Jurrjens stepped into the box and laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Angel Sanchez extended the rally and singled. San Antonio
banged out 8 hits on the night.

Joba Chamberlain(3-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning.
Rauch(1-2) absorbed the loss in relief. 'Wow, that was fun!', Chamberlain
said following the game. 'Once in a while you play a game that reminds you
just why you got into this business to begin with!'

Nassau fans certainly got their money's worth at Progressive Field. Max
Scherzer(4-3) pitched a rare no-hitter as the Washington Booze Hounds toppled
the Nassau ballclub 16 to 0.

Scherzer was spectacular. He walked 2 Nassau batters. The tension was
mounting with every inning after the 6th. Scherzer appeared oblivious
himself to the mounting history until two were out in the 9th. Only then,
did he allow himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound.
Scherzer whiffed an impressive total of 21 Nassau batters. Washington bats
were very productive in the 4th inning when they had 4 runs on 3 hits and the
7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3 hits. Washington had 17 hits for
the night.

Rick Porcello(2-3) was hit with the loss. 'Not in my wildest dreams did I
think this would happen!' Scherzer said as he stood at home plate to salute
the fans. 'Once I got into the later innings, I decided to challenge every
hitter, and that turned out to be the right decision!'

Tim Lincecum(16-10) thrilled the fans at Coors Field as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Kansas City Bashers. The Napa Winers won by a final
score of 3 to 0.

Lincecum provided a brilliant, unforgettable performance for the hometown
crowd at Coors Field evening. He surrendered no walks and could have tossed
a perfect game if it were not for the fielding error. The tension started to
build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified.
Lincecum racked up 11 strikeouts. Napa totaled 11 hits on the night.

Dallas Braden(7-9) was the loser. Lincecum was in a jubilant mood after the
game. 'If I'd known I was going to throw a no hitter I would have gotten a
haircut!' he said, much to the delight of the clubhouse gathering.
