Colorado Marines Welcome Pujols

In likely the biggest move in franchise history, the Colorado Springs Marines acquired slugger Albert Pujols from the Napa Winers in exchange for 2 1st round picks, 3B/2B Placido Polanco and SP Ervin Santana. After a long negotiating process that was dead for a time, saw near-completions of other deals involving the same pieces, and involved sleepless nights, Marines GM Eric Posch and Winers GM Eamonn Dymer finally pulled the trigger on the blockbuster deal.
"It was a long process, but when Albert's name came on the board, I knew I needed to get it done," a visibly pleased Posch said. As Pujols tried on his snazzy new green and white pinstripe uniform, a smattering of applause came from several of Albert's new teammates who were in attendance.
"Pujols is not only one of the league's best hitters, but also one of the league's elite fielders," Marines' ace Felix Hernandez said. "It'll be nice having him behind me."
Marines franchise 1B Joey Votto - now expected to move to DH - was also welcoming of the new star. "Absolutely, he's a great addition to the team. He's definitely the type of player you don't feel bad moving to DH for. It's going to be a special year with me and him batting 3-4 every game."

With less fanfare, but not without significance, came the addition of Rickie Weeks. With no clear second baseman heading into the 2011 seasons, Weeks' great offense, good speed and projected adequate defense definitely looks to be a great solution. The Marines now hope he can stay healthy and continue living up to his potential that made him the #2 overall pick in 2003.

If these moves are any indication, GM Eric Posch is serious about a push in 2011. "You're always looking to compete, but you also need to make the right moves for the team going forward," he said. "I feel that by adding Pujols and Weeks that not only did we greatly improve in the present, but that we have a couple franchise players to go along with the rest of our young core. It should be an exciting season."
