1st place finish the year in 2009.
The bright spots in the season were Jayson Werth and Kevin Youkilis who loved
playing in righty power friendly Camden Yards. The pitching staff was often
terrible finishing the season with a near 5 ERA. Jon Garland did manage to
pitch well after being aquired by the Aces and won 8 of his 12 decisions.
Going into 2010 it is looking as if the Aces are going to have to make some
tough decisions. First baseman Kevin Youkilis will be limited to about 2/3 of a
season and the outfield is significantly overmanned. Reno will most likely be
looking to move Corey Hart and/or Dexter Fowler and will definitely be seeing
Fred Lewis testing the market. Josh Hamilton, Jayson Werth, and Jay Bruce
should be the primary starting outfield in 2011. The infield appears to be
consisting of Youkilis at first, Hudson at second, Wright at third, and Desmond
at shortstop (at least until the late innings). The starting staff will consist
of the aforementioned Garland, Jeremy Guthrie, Mat Latos, and Brian Matusz.
Mariano Rivera looks to be closing for the Aces in 2011 and will have a young
supporting cast of relievers in the pen.
Some tough decisions are going to have to be made in Reno and some moves may
have to be made with some potential starting players. The Aces should have a
top 10 draft pick in the first round and will have a need for a starting
catcher, a middle of the rotation type starting pitcher, and a stud lefty in the
bullpen. Some player options with a lot of potential are going be looked at
including former ace Branden Webb.
Though the Aces couldn't get things going in 2010, 2011 is looking like it could
be a lot of fun. The Aces have the potential for six 25 plus homer players in
2011 and a pitching staff that could each win 10 games easily.
Here's saying goodbye to 2010 and see you real soon to 2011.
