Nassau finishes season
the Nassau G-Men finished the 2010 TBA season at a less than stellar 59-103, only waiting for Halifax to finish their schedule to see if they rate the 1st or 2nd overall pick in the 2011 draft ... there were some bright spots for Nassau despite their abysmal record ... Mark Reynolds finished the season with 52 HR's to go along with 111 RBI's to clearly be the G-Men's offensive MVP ... also notable were Casey McGehee's 26 HR's and 70 RBI's to go along with a .333 Avg and Gerrardo Parra's .303 Avg, as well as Franklin Guiterriez riding a hot Sept to a finish with a .290 Avg ... on the pitching side late season acquisition Zack Greinke finished up at 6-2 with a 2.15 ERA ...notable also was Matt Thornton with a 2.44 ERA out of the pen and Erik Bedard finishing with a 2.93 ERA despite a 3-7 record ... rookie Rick Porcello lead the the team with 10 wins to go along with 13 losses and a robust 5.64 ERA ... the future is uncertain as Nassau looks ahead to 2011 with a starting 3 of Greinke, Cole Hamels and Hiroki Kuroda to go along with closer Rafael Soriano but a plethora of holes on offense ... with an early 1st round pick GM Steve Garafalo looks to add some pop to the G-Men lineup or possibly trade the pick to recoup the 2nd rd pick traded to Kansas City in the Greinke deal ... either way the Nassau management has a long way to go to turn this team into a contender ... only time and the off-season will tell

Napa's Tim Lincecum pitches no hitter
Tim Lincecum came within 3 outs of a perfect game against K.C. His perfect game was ruined by a Jeff Keppinger error with no outs in the ninth inning. Lincecum's final line was:
9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K's.
When asked after the game about his feelings, Lincecum had this to say, "I really had my good stuff tonight. I felt good on the mound, hit my spots and was able to keep the hitters off balance all night. The defense played well behind me, mostly. I don't know what Kep's issue was with that groundball, he makes that play at least 3 times out of 20 in practice. I am pretty sure my 2 year old nephew coulda made that play but oh well, what are ya gonna do? We got the win and that is all that really matters."

Colorado Marines Season in Review
With a statement series, the Marines swept Vero Beach in 3 games to conclude their season 83-79. The Beach Bums, at 77-75, need to finish 7-4 in order to guarantee the last wild card spot. So while the Marines wait on their playoff hopes, they'll look back on their regular season:
Team MVP/Pitching MVP: Felix Hernandez. Although he didn't win the 2 necessary games to lock up win #20, Felix is the reason the Marines are even in the hunt. Finishing 18-9 with a 2.91 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 241 Ks, Felix boasts Cy Young credentials. Countless times after dropping a game or two in a series, the Marines would turn to Felix to be the stopper and he would come up big. He carried the team on his shoulders all season, and if the Marines make it into the playoffs, they will be doing the same.
Offensive MVP: Evan Longoria. Evan finished the season with a .301 (4th)/.398 (2nd)/.563 (3rd) triple-slash, 100 RBIs, and his 33 HRs and 58 doubles were both team highs. In addition, he played outstanding defense at a prime position, although his 20 caused some grief. He played like a man possessed in the final month of the season, and it seemed like he was constantly coming up with the big hits.
Relief MVP: Jon Broxton. Despite 5 losses, 3 blown saves and the occasionally collapse with inherited runners, Broxton's 1.63 ERA, 26 saves and 115 Ks in 72 innings are far too impressive to ignore. The Marines valued him as their best arm in important situations, and often used him as a fireman to shut the door in non-save situations.
Newcomer Award: Matt Wieters. Being the #1 pick brought great expectations for Mr. Wieters, and he mostly lived up to them in his first year finishing .311/.332/.409 with 7 HRs. The power wasn't there often, but he made it count when he did knock one, hitting two walk off home runs in August. Despite a rocky 2010 season, he will still be a prominent figure in the Marines plans going forward.
And some less prestigious credit...
Team LVP/Pitching LVP: Johnny Cueto. With what looked to be a solid card with even splits, Johnny Cueto was an embarrassment all year. Flirting with a double digit ERA halfway through the season was a constant source of annoyance, wondering why exactly he was so bad. In the end, he finished 9-15 with a 7.09 ERA and an astonishing 233 hits allowed in 176 innings. His penultimate start, however, was a gem against Vero Beach which helped the Marines forgive him a bit. Please be better next year, Johnny.
Better Than Yuniesky Betancourt (I guess) Award: Matt Kemp. With a card that should have brought him MVP numbers, Kemp was sub-par all season, ending up hitting .240/.293/.397. The power was there (23 HRs), the speed was there (30 steals) and the defense was great, but he simply did not get on base enough. With a dismal season in real baseball, too, things are not looking too great for Kemp. Dump Rihanna, PLEASE.
I Asked for Relief, Not Grief! Award: Franklin Morales. Overall, the bullpen was a very bright spot for the Marines, but having to choose, Morales is the easy winner. The Marines hoped he could be an effective LOOGY, but it was not to be. His ERA stayed tame (3.18) but an absolutely horrifying 8.7 BB/9 shows that if the Marines hadn't cut him off quickly, he would have been headed for trouble. He was also a bum in real baseball and will be collecting unemployment checks this winter.
Wish I'd Let You Go to Napa Award: Gabe Kapler. Kapler was brought in to do one thing and one thing only - hit lefties. With 42.1 OB% and 18.1 XBH%, it seemed a reasonable expectation that he would be a deadly force against the CCs of the world. What did he do then against lefties, you ask? Kapler hit .184 with just 3 HRs in 114 ABs pitted against southpaws. His .368 OBP was nice, but I really don't think it's too much to ask for a platoon guy to get over the Mendoza line against his better half.
---
Whatever happens with Vero Beach and the playoffs this year, the Marines have a very bright future and look to be serious contenders in 2011. With a stacked rotation of Felix Hernandez, Cliff Lee, Johnny Cueto, Francisco Liriano and Ervin Santana, a blowaway bullpen highlighted by Luke Gregerson and Daniel Bard, supported by offensive stalwarts Joey Votto, Evan Longoria and Justin Upton, not making the playoffs next year will be nothing short of failure.

LHL Playoff Teams Set, Order is All That's Left to Determine Now
Story First Appeared on TBA Website 9/10
While the Booze Hounds knew in mid-August they would be playing next month, Oahu, London, and Edgewater are now all set to join them.
However, all still have an incentive to play well until then. Why? To avoid that last wild card spot and a date with Washington in the first round.
No one wants to have to deal with the Booze Hounds right away. They have just dominated all season long, winning a record 109 games already with 18 games left to go! Looking through their roster it is hard to find a weak spot, or even one player you would rather pitch to over another.
But a short series might be easier to take them out. If Washington's pitchers struggle in games 1 and 2, Washington is all of sudden looking up. A fluke win early might also do the trick to get in the drivers seat over Washington, a place they have been in since April 11th.
Right now Edgewater is in that 4th playoff spot and is looking at Washington in the first round. They are still only 4.5 games out of winning the division and home field in the first round so anything can still happen between these three teams. Add in 11 games between Washington and London in this final month and London could be looking at the Booze Hounds right away next month.

Alamos, Bowlers Clinch Playoff Spots; Looking for Division Titles Next
Both the San Antonio Alamos and Bowling Green Bowlers have secured their spot in the 2010 postseason. It will be the first ever playoff appearance for both teams.
The Alamos and Bowlers are also both looking for first in the league, both with a .589 winning percentage. However, the Alamos have played seven more games and reside 0.5 games up on the Bowlers. The Alamos are closest to nailing down their division as their magic number is down to four.
Napa is currently second place in the Molitor division and bearing a huge collapse or big run by the team are looking at the first wild card spot. They have yet to play a game this block but have a magic number of 8 to make the playoffs. They still hold a 6 game lead of Vero Beach for the first wild card spot.
Vero Beach is the team everyone is focusing on right now. While they have yet to play a game this month they hold a 3.5 game lead over the Marines for that last wild card spot. The Marines have 2 more wins than the Bums but have played 11 more games. The two teams play a crucial four game series in Colorado before three more in Florida so there's still plenty of action to look forward to between the two teams.

The powerful San Antonio Alamos nipped the Vero Beach Bums in 10 innings 7 to
6 at Fenway Park in a hard fought contest.
Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. San Antonio came
out the victor in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Scott Rolen
opened up the rally as he doubled. Chris Iannetta got his turn next, but he
was a strikeout victim. Alcides Escobar then bombed a two-run dinger making
San Antonio the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. San
Antonio finished with 10 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to J.P. Howell(2-4) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Francisco Rodriguez(1-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Brighton Bearcats in review
Not much else can be said about the dismal 2010 season. After an OK start to the season, the Bearcats collapsed into a top 5 pick (most likely). After struggling below .500, the Cats decided to look towards next yr. There were a couple bright spots. Miguel Cabrera proved to be the player Brighton wanted turning in a .300/40/120 campaign (1 series to play).
Brighton's main weak spot was pitching and it got worse when management decided to jettison regular pitchers like Garland, Saunders, Madsen, Zavada, Beimel, in order to build for the future.
There are some bright spots for the future. First, the top 3 in the rotation is looking solid with 3 young studs ready to make their mark on the league. Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, and Trevor Cahill will hopefully be fixtures for years to come. Other key players under 30 include Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler, Colby Rasmus, Gordon Beckham, Ian Stewart, Stephen Drew, Adam Jones. Also key to the rebuild is that Brighton has acquired numerous picks. 11 picks in the first 4 rounds. 2 each in the first and second. Many picks will likely be spent shoring up a pathetic bullpen. Youth has been and will be served.
No team was busier than Brighton on the trade front (with all due respect to Eamonn). SOme deals worked out great (Buchholz, Beckham, Cahill, Lester), while others (namely trading Josh Hamilton in the pre-season fo Yunel Escobar) did not quite pan out. Win some/lose some. Overall, I think my teams future is brighter than it was when I took over.
While it eats at my gut to lose as frequently as I have, there will be a lot of depth in the draft and one pick should net another cornerstone.

Plenty to Look Forward to in September
Despite one team already preparing for October, there is still lots to watch in these next three weeks. There are eight teams vying for four spots in the Edgar Martinez League while London, Oahu, and Edgewater are battling it out to see who will avoid Washington in the Division Series. While the playoff races are heating up, individual achievements will grab their share of the highlights as well. With two home runs, Mark Reynolds will take the single season TBA home run record. That's despite already breaking the single season strikeout record with his 200 whiffs so far. Javier Vazquez is already the first in TBA history to win 20 games and looks to be the first to finish with a sub-2.00 ERA.
Bowling Green lead the Molitor division by a game and a half but the path to the division title will not be easy. 18 of their final 21 games are against teams with playoff aspirations. All but three of those games are against teams needing to have a strong September to grab a wild card spot. Napa trails the Bowlers in the division but has a strong eight game lead in the wild card.
San Antonio has a seemingly comfortable six game lead over the Bums right now but a four game series with Vero Beach in Fenway could change that quickly. The Bums have a two game lead over the Marines for the final wild card spot but play them seven times this month. Loves Park trails the Bums by five but look to close that gap with four games with the Bums at home. Aberdeen is only three back of the Bums and although don't have the fortune to match up them head to head they are very much alive.
Washington clinched the division a couple weeks ago and is just coasting to the playoffs. The big thing to look for is who will take the division in the Vander Wal division. No one wants to match up with Washington in the LHL Division Series so winning the division (or the first wild card spot) is crucial to make a Championship run. London has the toughest road by playing the Booze Hounds 11 times in the final month but perhaps this will give them an edge should they play in October. Also, don't count out Reno just yet. They play 12 games against last place teams and should one of the three teams in front of them falter, Reno is right back in the mix.
Playoff Scenarios if Season Ended Today:
EML
Bowling Green (1) vs. Vero Beach (4)
San Antonio (2) vs. Napa (3)
LHL
Washington (1) vs. Edgewater (4)
London (2) vs. Oahu (3)
Milestones to Watch for in September:
Can King Felix or CC Sabathia be the first to win 20 in the EML?
Will Rajai Davis (currently at .362) hit enough to best Pujol's 2009 average of .362?
Will anybody hit 40 or drive in 100 runs in the EML?
Can Justin Verlander get to 300 strikeouts?
How many home runs will Mark Reynolds hit?
Can Washington win 120 games?
Will it be Halifax or Nassau (perhaps someone else) making the difficult decision with the number one pick come February?
Series to Watch For:
9/3-9/6: Vero Beach @ Colorado Springs
9/7-9/10: Vero Beach @ Loves Park
9/11-9/13: London @ Edgewater
9/11-9/13, 9/18-9/20: Oahu @ Reno
9/14-9/17: Vero Beach @ San Antonio
9/18-9/20: Colorado Springs @ Vero Beach
