2010 TBA All Star Game

I guess I was in an All Star mood tonight. I took it upon myself to play the TBA All Star Game while I watched the MLB version on TV.

It was fairly easy to do. Under the League Menu, I used the "Create All Star Game" item to generate the team rosters. Next, I let the "Generate Computer Manager" feature from the Team menu create lineups for both teams. Finally, I imported Wrigley Field (home park of the TBA Champion Bartonville Bombers) using the "Import Ballpark Info..." from the Team menu as the field for the home Edgar Martinez team.

Playing the game was another matter. I tried to manager both teams fairly and use as many players as possible just like in an MLB All Star Game. I had to restart the contest three times due to substitution errors I made. It took me awhile to get used to changing pitchers every inning and I had to study the lineups carefully before I decided who and when I would substitute.

Alas, somewhere in the process the teams switched names. The Lenny Harris League became named the Edgar Martinez League and vice versa. If you look at the top line of the box score it says:

[1]BOXSCORE: 2010 Edgar Martinez At 2010 Lenny Harris 7/13/2010

which is wrong. However the teams batted in the correct order Harrys first, Martys second. Go figure. Anywhoooo.... the game itself was exciting.

The Martys took the lead in the bottom of the third off Harry starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (WAS). Bowling Green's shortstop Derek Jeter singled with one out and went to third on DH Adam Lind's (HAL) two out single. Bartonville's own first baseman Adrian Gonzalez walked to load the bases.

Wainwright induced left fielder Jason Bay (representing SAN) to ground weakly to Oahu first baseman Prince Fielder who promptly booted the ball. Jeter scored on the play to give the Martys a 1-0 lead. NOTE: Fielder's poor fielding is nothing new to Glorious Wonder fans. In 2009, Prince led all TBA first baseman with 24 errors. His nearest competitor had ten miscues.

The Harrys tied the game in the top of the fifth. With KCB's Zack Greinke on the mound, WAS's third baseman Ryan Zimmerman led off with a sharp single to center. Los Angeles' Ryan Braun walked. After one out, with second baseman Bryan Roberts (EDG) at the plate both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Roberts then lofted Greinke next pitch out to Bay in left. Despite a strong throw by Bay, Zimmerman scored on the sac fly to even the score at 1-1.

The Harrys went ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Boozehound catcher Joe Mauer doubled in Nassau's center fielder Franklin Guttierrez who had led off with a single.

That set the stage for a dramatic ninth inning comeback for the victorious Martys. Reliever Rafael Soriano, who had finished the 8th inning for the Harrys, retired Vero Beach Bum third baseman Michael Young on a flyball to Old Bridge LFer David DeJesus to start the ninth Next, Soriano walked Reno RFer Jason Werth.

Edgwater's ace closer Joe Nathan relieved Soriano and promptly got LOV catcher Victor Martinez to foul out to WAS 1B Mark Teixeira. Next, Nathan walked Jeter to put runners on first and second. Then, with two outs and the crowd in a frenzy, Colorado Springs' Matt Kemp, who had played the entire game in center field, strolled to the plate.

Kemp ran the count to 2-1 before Nathan delivered a belt high fastball which Kemp drilled high and deep to straight away center field. Marty center fielder Guttierrez, playing shallow hoping to prevent a game tying single, was off at the crack of the bat in vain pursuit. Guttierrez crossed the warning track at full bore then leaped high toward the ivy covered wall. For a moment, Kemp's ball appeared to plop into the very tip of Guttierrez's outstretched mitt but the force of the center fielder's effort met the staunch red brick of Wrigley thereby dislodging both the ball and Guttierrez's senses.

Werth and Jeter, running with the pitch, took advantage of the ball's long hang time and scored easily. Kemp stopped at third, called time quickly and galloped off to center field to check on the well being of his counterpart thereby delaying any victory celebration. Fortunately, Guttierrez was up after several minutes and appeared to be OK.

Kemp was later named the game's MVP.

On a side note, Reno's 2B Orlando Hudson was injured in the fifth causing a bit of turmoil for the Harry's management. At that point, the LHL's only remaining position player Oregon catcher Bengie Molina was forced to play second base. Fortunately for the Harrys, Molina's tenure at second base passed without incident.

Matt Kemp had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Martinez League team staged a dramatic
comeback over the Harris League All-Stars by a score of 3 to 2 at Wrigley
Field, the home of the defending Champion Bombers.

The Martinez League erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2
runs. After an out was recorded, Jayson Werth started the rally when he drew a
walk. After another out, Derek Jeter stepped in and he drew a walk. Kemp
then tripled making the Martinez All-Stars the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Martinez League won despite being out-hit by the Harris League 8
hits to 5.

The win was credited to Jonathan Broxton(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no
runs. The losing pitcher was Joe Nathan(0-1) in relief. He allowed 1 run and
1 hit in 1/3 of an inning.

'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Kemp noted. 'It was looking
pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really
paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the
end!'

  2. Nice seeing my Marines come through 8-) Sad that there was no love for Felix, though! Leads the EML in ERA and H/9, tied for 1st in wins and 3rd in Ks!
