Raul Ibanez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Tropicana Field where the Halifax
Mooseheads beat the Vero Beach Bums in 12 innings 2 to 0.

Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Halifax won it in the 12th
inning. Aaron Hill started the inning off right when he drew a walk. Adam
Lind came to the plate and drew a walk. Ibanez then tripled. Chase Headley
was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Mark Kotsay was the next batter,
but he struck out. Although they lost, Vero Beach did out-hit Halifax 10 to
5.

The winning pitcher was Roy Halladay(1-0) who allowed no runs in 11 innings.
Halladay got help from Mike Adams who was credited with his 1st save. Brian
Sanches(0-1) took the loss in relief.

BOW's Block 1 Report

Since the Quad City franchise was absorbed in the dispersal draft, I am the sole GM left with a “computer-drafted” roster. Last season, the Bowlers finished the first block with a 17 – 7 record. At that point, I thought a computer-drafted roster was the best thing in the world! From that point on, it really went down hill, being a struggle just to finish 82 – 80. This year’s first block put the Bowlers at 15 – 10. Due to some scheduling quirk, 18 of my 25 games were at home, including all 8 of my games versus Napa. I’m going to pay for that later in the season…..especially all those trips to Coors Field to play Napa!

The computer picks seem to disregard age, defense, and (especially in my case) BAL & Hold ratings. While several of these guys are no longer around (JC Romero / Brocail / Yabu / Alb. Lopez), several players (Feldman / Arroyo / Floyd / Hoffman) did surprise me by righting themselves for 2010. The only real “prospect” I still have on my roster from last year is Phil Hughes. At one point early last year, when he was stinkin’-up the joint as a starter for the Yankees, I came within a mouse click of dropping him! That would have been a BIG mistake.

This season, I have a decent, but not spectacular, starting core with Sabathia / Arroyo / Floyd / Feldman. In 2009, "6R" Arroyo was on a pace to cough-up almost 60 HRs with a 7+ ERA before I benched him for the last two blocks. This year, he’s performing better than that, but still tends to be a bullpen-taxing starter. Will Sabathia repeat his league-high 19-win season? My guess is no, but I am hoping that he at least makes the mid-teens in wins. So far, that core of four (plus Duensing) seems to be in “break-even” mode after the first block, with a combined 9 – 9 record. Although, at one point this past block, they did manage to allow 3 grand slams in the span of 4 games! In Block 2, Duensing will either be sent to the minors or the bullpen to make way for fellow rookie T. Hunter. The bullpen seems to be my savior, as they are 6 – 1 with mostly sub-2.00 ERAs, but it’s still very early. No. 1 pick N. Feliz has yet to see action, but he should shortly. Based on T. Hoffman’s recent performance for the Brewers, Feliz could be my 2011 closer-in-waiting.

While they seem to be putting-up decent numbers, the offense managed to get shut-out 3 times in the span of 5 games. K. Suzuki had a monster block batting .455 and knocking-in 23 RBI with 16 extra-base hits, 6 of them being dingers. (This was after hitting only 8 HRs and tallying 56 RBIs in 470+ ABs last season.) He started the season batting 9th, but was quickly raised in the batting order. I don’t expect this to continue, but it was a pleasant surprise.

At 3B, I’m still debating playing the glove of Inge vs. the much better bat of Cantu. As many of you (fondly?) remember, Cantu cost me several games with his lack of defense at 3B. Inge will only bat .200 at best (coincidently where he is right now) with some power versus the lefties. But I still bear the scars of my 2009 “20 / 20 / 20” infield….where SS Jeter / 2B K. Johnson / 3B Cantu all managed 20+ errors that led to (too) many unearned runs. So far, this year’s defense appears to be somewhat improved (14 errors so far, with 7 coming from pitchers…Feldman with 4 of them!). Second Round pick K. Blanks was promoted as an injury replacement in one series and responded with a 4-for-9 performance, including 2 HRs. In “real life” for the Padres, he started the season with 2 HRs, but has quickly slumped to below the Mendoza-line with his AVG and is riding the pine occasionally.

It’s been fun getting back into the groove and playing again after the long, cold winter and the agonizingly-slow (but necessarily so) draft. Napa’s Eamonn appears to be a great addition to the EML…..showing a good sense of humor with the Blalock situation! Looking forward to playing the other newbie (Ryan / KC) in the upcoming blocks.

Bearctas....an early evaluation

After taking over the Brooklyn franchise AFTER the dispersal draft, I had to put my own stamp on a franchise that was old and challenged on defense and lacked pitching. I didn't expect a lot, and so far my team has performed as expected thusfar at 13-12.

What did I expect? Powerful offense with a subpar pitching staff. Lets breakdown the roster after block 1.

Catcher-Russell Martin was a late pickup that was obtained to provide a younger defensive presence. He has done that. What was not expected was a .329 avg with 3 HR and .398 OBP after block 1. Gerald Laird has provided a defensively sound backup when Martin needs a day off.

1B-Lance Berkman provided what was expected. Decent avg (.282) and solid power. His age and injury status prompted management to get young slugger Miguel Cabrera who is awaiting his debut.

2B-Chase Utley is the clear MVP of the team thusfar. .300 avg wih .400 OBP. Add to that the fact that he has knocked 9 out of the park already and management is pleased that they resisted trading the popular Utley.

SS-Yunel Escobar. We will start with the good. He has provided a steady defensive precence in the IF. After that, it isn't pretty. An OBP hovering around .260 and and avg below the mendoza line is not acceptable. While management will remain patient, Escobar is losing some AB's vs RHP in favor of Ramon Santiago who is hitting .395 in 38 AB's while also providing solid defense.

3B-Adam Laroche has been exactly what management expected. A solid defender with an adequate bat. Laroche is hitting just under .290 with 13 RBI out of the 7th or 8th spot. If he keeps up the pace, Brighton will be pleased.

LF-Matt Holiday-Holliday was as advertised. His avg was over .350 and OBP of .467 after 80 AB's. Management cringed at the thought of moving him, but you have to give to get. Miguel Cabrera should replace Holliday's bat and help infuse more youth into the lineup. Juan Rivera will take a majority of the AB's in LF. Rivera has shown good pop in a part time role with 4 HR, but the avg/obp will need to improve.

CF-Adam Jones. Brighton has been ecstatic with the play of this young star in the making. His defense is stellar and he has shown good power in the first block with 6HR and an avg of .296. Those numbers combined with his work with the leather will keep him a Bearcat for a long time.

RF-Playing out of position in RF, rookie Colby Rasmus has played well and will be expected to continue as he will get plenty of AB's with Holliday's departure. After 66 AB's, he is hitting .318 with 5 HR and a solid OBP of .366. He will now get a few more AB's vs. lefties.

Bench-Possibly the most pleasant suprise on the bench is veteran Josh Anderson. He was expected to be soleyl a defensive replacement and pinch runner, but he has been good with the bat. In 31 AB's, Anderson is hitting .387 with a .424 OBP. No one expects him to become a regular, but he has earned himself more playing time than planned. Hank Blalock has been dealt as Brighton continues to try and put out a solid defensive effort. His replacement fresh off the waiver wire is Jack Hannahan. He will provide a LH compliment to Adam Laroche without sacrificing defense. Willie Bloomquist is what he is. He is extremely versitile which is valuable to an NL team. His avg is just over .260 and his defense is nothing to brag about. However, as long as he proves to be competent with the bat, his versatility will likely keep him employed. As mentioned, Greald Laird has been a solid backup and Ramon Santiago will see more time vs. RHP.

On to the not so good...the pitching. Jon Lester has been the lone bright spot ijn a dismal rotation. He sports and ERA of 1.76 while striking out 53 in 41 innings. He will need to keep it up if there is any hope of a .500 record. Veteran Jon Garland has provided solid, but unspectacular innings. He has chalked up 3 wins and his ERA is just over 4. Expect more of the same. Lefty John Saunders has been hot and cold. Mostly cold. One brilliant game was followed by 2 poor ones. His ERA is an abysmal 6.61. He will continue to get innings, but the time is now to show more. Ian Snell was not expected to do much of anything and he has done exactly that. His 7.71 ERA is an embarrassment and his 7.2 walks per 9 innings is not stuff of legends. With Clay Buchholz waiting in the wings, Snell is on a short leash. Kevin Slowey has been a pleasant suprise. While he was injured for a large portion of 09', he has pitched a couple strong starts and will get more spot starts in the future. Deric Holland was a 4th rd pick who was picked on promise. He will get some starts by deafult. He will likely be limited to reserves largely due to his 10.00+ ERA so far. Youngsters Clay Buchholz, Felipe Paulino, Garrett Mock, and Kris Medlan are awaiting their opportunites to show what they can do. Out of the bunch, Buchholz is the only one with a clear and bright future with the club. Paulinos K/9 rate provides some hope for the future, but he has yet to get any time on the big club. Medlan will probably see time in long relief and Mock is looking to be a mop up man.

Bullpen. This is a mixed bag. The season started with no clear closer, and it stays that way. The bright spot to date is Ramon Troncoso. With a shaky rotation, Troncoso worked early and often, and delivered. In 15 innings, Troncoso has an ERA of 0.59 with a win and 3 saves. More pleasing to management is that he averages less than one walk per 9 innings thusfar. The season started with Ryan Madsen as closer. He will still get his chances, but pitched himself out of being "the man". He has a record of 1-0 with 2 saves, but an ERA over 6.00. He didn't get too much play, so expect Madsen to sink or swim as closer in block 2. Brighton still continues to try to let one of the clubs lefties to take charge of the top lefty spot. Clay Zavada, Joe Biemel, and Daniel Ray Herrera have all been passable with ERA's under 5, but not that good all with ERA's over 4. Jon Racuh and Fernando Rodney are expected to see more exposure in block 2.

After block 1, there is a lot to like and dislike.

THE GOOD: With Utley, Cabrera, Adam Jones, Rasmus, Martin, Escobar in the lineup, Brighton should still be able to put runs across the plate. Also, Brigthon's defense is a lot better than it was at the start. 2' Utley and Escobar paired with 1's Adam Jones and Russell Martin provide great up the middle defense. Laroche is flypaper at 3B. River and Rasmus are adequate in LF/RF. Miguel Cabrera is a slight step back from Berman defensively, but will more than make up for it with the bat.

THE BAD: Other than Lester and Troncoso, the pitching staff has ranged from mediocre to a train wreck. Slowey and Buchholz will hopefully anchor this rotation in the next season.

THE OUTLOOK: More of the same. Brighton will continue to be involved in a lot of 7-6 type ballgames. They will probably win about as many as they lose. With that said, Brighton management has proven that it it isn't afraid to make moves to get younger and build for a future without tanking the current season. Veterans A-Rod, Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday, and Josh Hamilton, have all been moved in order to bring in Jon Lester, Adam Jones, Miguel Cabrera, and Yunel Escobar (and picks).

Ted Lilly(2-1) thrilled the fans at Busch Stadium as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Old Bridge Titans. The Washington Booze Hounds won
by a final score of 3 to 0.

Lilly was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Old Bridge batters
down like so many dominoes. He surrendered no walks and could have tossed a
perfect game if it were not for the fielding error. The tension was mounting
with every inning after the 6th. Lilly appeared oblivious himself to the
mounting history until two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he allow
himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound. Washington rapped
out 11 hits for the night.

Carl Pavano(1-3) was the losing pitcher. After the game, Lilly was heard to
say, 'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to
have it come true is just amazing!'

Colorado Springs: Commodity Shifts

Though mid-April is hardly the time to evaluate a player's performance, I was inspired by Joe's post to analyze my players whose values have increased, and those who have decreased.

Value ^^^:
Francisco Liriano (SP) - After 3 starts, Liriano's looking like the pitcher Marines GM Eric Posch was hoping for when he drafted him. His control issues are improving, and his velocity and slider are back to being ace-like. High hopes for him going forward.

Howie Kendrick (2B) - Doing what Kendrick does when he's healthy - getting LOTS of hits. .315 average through 54 ABs, but what's most impressive so far is his OBP sitting close to .400. Some more XBHs would be nifty, but if he holds down his triple slash line for the season, the Marines be more than happy.

Joba Chamberlain (RP) - Though always a supporter of Joba as a starter, the Marines have to love what he's doing out of the pen so far. A 1.20 WHIP with a strong K/9, and he's just settling in. If everything goes as planned, the Marines could have a relentless pen in 2011 with Broxton, Bard, Gregerson and Joba, perhaps even along with Franklin Morales if he settles down.

Andruw Jones (OF) - Off to a torrid start this year, with an OPS of 1.076 in 34 ABs. The 4 HRs are great, and the Marines are hoping Jones can continue to perform and perhaps be a sleeper.

Value VVV:

All Reds' pitchers - Johnny Cueto. Homer Bailey. Aaron Harang. All have WHIPs over 1.50 in the early season. After showing so much promise late last year, Bailey's gone back to his old bag of tricks and is in danger of losing his job. These pitchers need to get their acts together, or the Marines SP depth is in a world of hurt.

Travis Snider (OF) - Obtained last year for a bag of shells and still only 22, but the slugging prospect is off to a disappointing start this season. .143 average to go along with a strikeout in over a quarter of his at bats. Has a couple bombs, though, and the talent is there. He will require patience.

London Badgers finish block 1

After a long and completely uneventful off-season (1 trade made during the draft, nothing before then), the London Badgers entered the season with a few question marks. Could Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer supply the power? How will the injury to Johan Santana effect the rotation? Will Alphonso Soriano provide more than just atbats at 3B this year? Who's on first?

Well it is far too early to answer any of those questions, but the Badgers are catiously optimistic by their 16-7 start. So far Jason Kubel has popped 6 home runs, Casey Kotchman and Jared "Skip" Schumaker have contributed nicely with .344 and .333 batting averages respectively, and Alphonso Soriano has chipped in with a .952 OPS to go along with a very respectable 3.10 team ERA despite Mark Buehrle having what appears to be Mike Pelfrey syndrome (see London Badgers team of last year, you'll understand). Manager C. Montgomery Burns stated that "Buehrle makes Elizabeth Hurley look like a good pitcher these days. Buehrle has accounted for 3 of our 7 losses!" In 4 starts, Buehrle has an attrocious 8.06 ERA with a 1.87 WHIP while giving up 4 home runs over 26 innings. Aside from Buehrle, the Badgers rotation has carried this team.

Dan Haren - 5-1 with an ERA of 2.28 along with a WHIP of 0.90 over 43 1/3 innings. He was expected to be one of the leading men this year and has not failed to dissapoint.

Josh Johnson - 3-1 with an ERA of 1.27 along with a WHIP of 0.88 over 35 1/3 innings. After perhaps reaching for him in the draft, Johnson so far is proving to be a good choice and has combined with Haren for a formidable 1-2 punch.

Johan Santana - London's first ever draft pick was a massive dissapointment last year (14-11 with a 4.48 ERA). So far he has been brilliant posting a 2-1 record with a 2.75 ERA. The Badgers wish he had a few more innings in his arm, but they will take what he gives them.

Mike Pelfrey - Owner Paul Mudry is quoted as saying "I believe Mike Pelfrey has gotten over the Mike Pelfrey syndrome". Pelfrey was abysmal last year (although he got hot late in the year), but so far this year, Pelfrey has gone 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA. When asked about this change, Pelfrey said "Mr. Burns told me to remember some inspiring words that someone else might have told me over the course of my life."

The back end of the Badgers bullpen has done very well, although righty specialists Jesse Crain and Mark Lowe both sport 4.91 ERAs. Despite an ugly ERA over 7 and with the exception of 2 outings, Kyle McClellan was nearly untouchable not giving up a single run. James McDonald and Jose Mijares have contributed ERAs less than 2 while Kerry Wood in 10 innings has converted 6 saves and has yet yield a run.

While the Badgers are cautiously optimistic with all of the positives going on, they are also patiently waiting on some of their heavy cogs such as Jason Bartlett and Michael Cuddyer to start producing on offense. Burns noted "If Cuddyer and Bartlett do not perform well shortly, it may affect their confidence. We may have to prepare the amnesia ray." Mudry quickly informed everyone that the team will not be shooting any of their players for poor performances...except maybe Buehrle. Mudry said the team knows it is a long season and April does not matter if it cannot be sustained. Mudry also asked that the owner of the Blue Honda Civic get their car out of Mudry's parking spot.

WAS: Good Decision -- Bad Decision

With only a very small sample size of 2010 results, I'm looking at some of my off-season decisions to see how I fared. I basically had to decide among about 7 players for the final 3 keeper spots on my roster. The results are not so good:

GOOD DECISIONS:
  • Elijah Dukes: traded before draft. With Elijah being cut by the Nationals in spring training and not yet picked up (to my knowledge), this looks like my best decision. Of course the original trade to acquire him (bascially for Denard Span) completely obliterates any positive now.
  • Alberto Gonzalez (Nationals) as a keeper. Gonzalez crushed LHP last year. I didn't expect him to have any future value past this season. He's performing very well for my team as PH and platooning player vs. LHP.

BAD DECISIONS:

  • Chase Headley: traded before the draft. I really didn't want to move Headley, but he was caught in a 3B (Zimmerman and Wood) numbers crunch. Moved him for a useful 4th rounder, but he's crushing the ball in 2010.
  • Brandon Wood as a keeper. He's been TERRIBLE this season as Angels 3B. The perpetual prospect doesn't look good at all.
  • Ervin Santana: cut. I *really* wanted to keep Santana but went with Morrow instead. I couldn't even get a 7th rounder for Santana prior to the draft where he was taken in the 4th round. I had the depth to stash him away but not the keeper slots. Santana looks pretty good so far in 2010.

TO BE DECIDED:

  • Brandon Morrow as a keeper. It sounded promising when he was traded to Toronto and turned back into a starter. The results have not followed. I'm not sure this guy is worth the years of keeping to see if he pans out. The only saving grace is that he provides useful innings this year as a SP, RP, and Closer against RH batters. He's been pitching for me as mop-up mostly. He already has one or two saves but a sky-high ERA.
  • Ben Sheets: traded before the draft. Another SP I wanted to keep but decided to take the picks in trade to rebuild my bullpen. Looks decent enough in Oakland so far.

Time will tell on some of these, but early returns don't make me look good.
